What Is The Toy Paradox?

The more toys children have available to them, the less they play with them (and the more they seem to be underfoot!).
Why Is This?
Too many toys are overwhelming for children. They have difficulty choosing and it makes them anxious. It is much easier for them to simply get an adult to entertain them.
How Can This Be Avoided?
1 – Limit the number of toys available to your child. Do this by rotating toys and giving/throwing away toys that are unused, broken, no longer age-appropriate. With fewer toys, each one becomes more precious. Also, limiting toys allows for increased depth of play.
2 – Be picky when deciding which toys you make available to your child. Be sure to offer simple, high-quality, age appropriate toys.
3 – Allow your children to be bored. When your child complains of boredom, respond in a neutral way (“oh dear”) and/or empathize (“I can see you are bored”) but don’t offer entertainment. Allow your child to struggle a bit; out of boredom comes resourcefulness, self-reliance, and creativity. (Warning: this may not be easy…your child will probably try to engage you several times before giving up).
Just Play Toy Rental is not about bringing more toys (and therefore more clutter) into your home. We encourage you to simplify life by removing unwanted, low quality toys and replacing them with fewer, high quality rented toys. By encouraging your child to focus on only a few toys at a time, he/she is more likely to return to those toys and come up with new ways of playing with them. You will be amazed at their capacity for creativity!
